The Best Turkey Wins

While some grocery items are more expensive during the holiday season, my observation of frozen turkey prices leads me to the conclusion that the time leading up to Thanksgiving is actually the most inexpensive time to buy frozen turkey meat!

One average-sized turkey (10+ lbs.) can provide meals for a whole month if rationed carefully, and turkey is much healthier than beef, and even chicken.

So, far, here are the prices I’ve seen:

  • Bloom and Food Lion: $.57/lb.
    • limit 2 turkeys with and additional $35 purchase (I am not sure if this is pre-coupon/how it works if your total is lower)
    • 10 lbs. or more
  • Ingles: $.68/lb.

    • Limit one
  • Publix: $.69/lb.
  • Bi-Lo: $.79/lb.*
    • Limit 2**with $25 additional purchase (bleh!)**
    • *Their ad states that they will price-match any competitor’s turkey price (excludes Butterball and fresh turkeys)
  • Aldi: $.99/lb. (Butterball Turkey)

May the best turkey win!  So far Ingles is in the lead!  (In my book, at least, because they don’t state a specific purchase requirement.)  Please comment with any additional input or information!  I will also update as I find new info.

Last year at my Food Lion they rang up everything but the turkey to be sure you had the $35 minimum then rang up the turkey and then took off my coupons. They do have some good sales this week and I have a few rainchecks so I won’t have trouble with the minimum. The clerks at my store are very friendly so I don’t think it will be a problem.

Thanks, Lana! That is helpful to know–especially that it is the pre-coupon price.

I did notice some great sales in the Food Lion ad for this week!

Also, the bigger the turkey, the better the buy at the sale price. You have to pay for the skeleton (bones) regardless of the size; the bigger the bird, the more meat. (To an extent, of course, but w/in ranges: 10-13 lbs. buy 13 lbs; 15-20, buy 20 lbs; 20-25 lbs, buy 25 lbs).

This comes a bit late for Thanksgiving, but last year Sam’s had frozen turkeys on sale for around $.25/lb after Thanksgiving. For anyone with a lot of spare freezer space this makes for a really good deal on meat.

I heard from someone at church that you don’t really have to spend $35 at Bloom to get the sale price on the turkey. I haven’t gone there yet, so I don’t know if all Blooms do that.

Last night I ran into Bloom & didn’t remember the $35 minimum. My son went & picked up the ads - our goal was to keep the turkey price as a good deal. We bought a lot of the B1G1F items & walked out the door saving only $3 less than we spent (w/o coupons). I had fallen off the savings wagon for a while & now remember what fun it can be.
